Background: Zyn grew up at Ak-tu's magical school in Pann, Galia. Ak-tu is their father figure and Ren is their sister. None of them are related by blood, as Ak-tu got Zyn and their sister when they were just babies at an orphanage. Zyn and Ren weren't allowed to take any magical classes growing up, as Ak-tu wanted it to be fair for every student at the school and not give his kids an advantage over the others. That didn't stop Zyn from trying to sneak into classes and learn more about magic though! They grew up living as a "girl" and referred to such in the majority of the first book, though they are questioning their gender at this point and eventually try out different pronouns.
